Guide to point your domain name to your web hosting by NameCab

If you want to have your website living on the internet, you need to have 3 things together: Domain, Website source, and Hosting. And then, in order to use it, you also need to connect them together, upload your website on to the hosting then point your domain to your hosting, usually, these 2 parts (domain and hosting) are on different providers

Domain name is the website address in order that people can see introductions, products, services that you’re supplying. If someone wants to visit your web, they must know and remember your website address name, instead of the group of a numeric IP address.

You can read more about domain name definition here: What is the domain name?

Hosting is the place storing your whole website source code and data.

There are 2 ways to point your domain to hosting, you just need to do one of them:
  1. Point domain to NameServers of Hosting
  2. Point domain to the IP address of Hosting
The first method is much faster and simpler than the 2nd one, you just need to point your domain to default Nameservers of hosting, immediately your website can work, all services will also be activated automatically.

If you are not sure how to do it then prioritize option 1.

1. Point domain to NameServers of Hosting

After your hosting account is activated, you will receive an email from hosting provider containing all essential information to use, in which 2 Nameserver addresses that we need to point the domain name to.

Now access to your Domain management page and change the Nameserver, then you need to wait some minutes for domain name update.

To check your Nameservers status, you can do Whois check at https://who.is, They update domain’s information so fast without any caching.

2. Point domain name to IP address of Hosting

This method is a little bit more complicated than the above, but you can all the way choose Nameservers, steps in order to manage records more conveniently and faster, make the most of some superior services of a name server.

2.1. Define the IP address of Hosting

Firstly, you need to verify the IP address of the hosting package that you registered.

Some guys sometimes use their default IP in information mail of hosting provider; however, sometimes this is not the IP to point that causes errors

To get standard IP, you need to login to cPanel, in DOMAINS section click on Advanced Zone Editor. The IP will be shown for you. After having the IP address, now we point the domain to IP.

Because we do not use default Nameservers from hosting provider, you need to choose Nameserver for the domain, there are 2 options:
  1. Use default name server from a domain registrar
  2. Use name server from intermediary services such as CloudFlare, PowerDNS của Namecheap…

2.2. If you use default Nameserver from a domain registrar

As usual, by default, you will get Nameservers from domain registrar when registering new domains from them. If you pointed it to other Nameservers, you need to point it back, there is always an option of changing this default record in the setting.

Make sure that your domain pointed to default Nameserver, if you’re using default Nameservers from Godaddy, I have an article guiding about this. You can read and follow it.

Then you need to wait a while for the system to update to the new IP. It may take a long time, probably up to 48 hours such as 1&1, or Z.com, keep patience.

There are 2 records acquired to make your domain works property: record @ (or namecab.com) and record www (or www.namecab.com). Be noticed to point both these 2 records to IP hosting, then check again by ping.

Good luck to you,
